About the destination: Saint Louis is a major midwestern metropolis and Missouri’s largest city. Located on the western bank of the Mississippi River, Saint Louis is a great American city to visit. The city has many interesting sites, both historic and modern, really great food, all types of music, architecture, museums and other attractions. The Gateway Arch is the most famous landmark in Saint Louis and it does dominate the skyline. It is set in the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial right along the Mississippi riverfront on the edge of downtown. There is an underground museum and at the top, the view is spectacular. The Old Courthouse is part of the National Park Service's Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, and in contrast with the straight skyscrapers that surround it, this classical building composes, with the arch in the background the best sight of town. Most of the museums in the city are world-class and free. Soulard is the pub district in Saint Louis, but there is free entertainment many nights of the week and all over the city, plus unique restaurants and bars with live music far into the night and live theatre and concert venues to entertain you, too. Saint Louis, Gateway to the West, offers visitors an all-American experience.

About the destination: The town of St. Francisville was established in 1809, and a number of historic structures from that period still exist. Called "the town two miles long and two yards wide" because it was developed atop a narrow ridge overlooking the Mississippi River, it was the commercial and cultural center of the surrounding plantation country. Below St. Francisville's bluffs, another early settlement called Bayou Sara had been established by French colonists in the early 1790s. It was at one time the largest antebellum Mississippi River port between New Orleans and Memphis, but was superseded by Natchez. The settlement was gradually destroyed by repeated flooding and fires, and nothing exists of Bayou Sara today. A few of its surviving structures were hauled up the hill into St. Francisville in the 1920s.This area and other former French-controlled territories east of the Mississippi River was taken over by Great Britain after it defeated France in the Seven Years' War in 1763.

About the destination: Set along the east bank of the Mississippi River, Darrow, Louisiana, is a quiet slice of plantation country that feels a world away from the bustle of nearby Baton Rouge and New Orleans. This tiny community is best known for its grand historic estates, moss-draped oak trees, and tranquil rural landscapes, offering visitors a slower pace and a chance to connect with the region’s layered past. The main attraction in Darrow is its beautifully preserved plantation homes, many of which are open for guided tours. These estates showcase antebellum architecture, carefully restored interiors, and lush gardens that tell stories of wealth, hardship, and the complex history of the American South. Walking through these grounds, you’ll encounter exhibits that address not only the elegance of plantation life, but also the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored there. Beyond historic tours, Darrow is a convenient base for exploring the broader River Road corridor. Scenic drives along the Mississippi lead to additional plantations, small-town cafés, and family-run restaurants where you can sample classic Louisiana flavors—from gumbo and jambalaya to fresh Gulf seafood. The surrounding countryside also lends itself to leisurely bike rides, photography, and bird-watching along the river levees. Because Darrow is small, most visitors combine a stay here with day trips to nearby Gonzales, Baton Rouge, or even New Orleans, all within easy driving distance. Accommodations range from charming bed-and-breakfasts in historic homes to modern hotels a short drive away. If you’re looking for a quieter, more reflective stop on a Louisiana itinerary—one that balances beautiful architecture with an honest look at history—Darrow is a rewarding and memorable destination.
